DanceSport Festival Rules
These rules set out how DanceSport festivals are run — the types of dance formats and how competitors are divided by type, age, dance style and category, with restrictions on figures, costumes, make-up and hairstyles according to their technical level. The festivals are open to everyone.

Costumes and Make-up
- Dancers' costumes must fully respect ethical standards and good taste, and must suit the dance style being performed.
- Dancewear must fully cover the intimate areas of the body at all times during the performance, regardless of the dance movements.
- Skin-coloured briefs, bras or other garments that create the visual illusion of nudity in the intimate areas are not allowed.
- In all categories up to age 9 (Kids Mini 1, Kids Mini 2 and Juveniles 1), make-up and shiny hair decorations are not allowed.
General Rules and Restrictions
- Solo competitions are open to girls and boys.
- Competitors who dance in couples may also dance solo.
- Dancers from "First Steps" couples may also enter solo competitions, but only in the "First Steps" category.
- Competitors may dance each style at a different level (e.g. LAT — Basic 2, STD — Basic 1). This does not apply to "First Steps".
1. First Steps
A competition for complete beginners (dancing for up to 1 year). They perform the compulsory combination — Cha-Cha-Cha and Slow Waltz.
- May dance one age group up.
Not allowed:
- To compete in other dance categories; choreography must use only the permitted figures (see table below).
- To add extra figures as decoration at the start of the choreography.
Finals of up to 8 participants, full ranking from 1st to 8th place. Competitors using non-permitted figures are disqualified and placed last in the respective final.
2. Basic 1 (Closed Basic)
LAT and STD are danced separately.
- Kids Mini 1, Kids Mini 2 and Juveniles 1 — LAT: Cha-Cha-Cha and Jive; STD: Slow Waltz and Quickstep.
- Older age groups — LAT: Cha-Cha-Cha, Rumba and Jive; STD: Slow Waltz, Tango and Quickstep.
- May dance one age group up.
Not allowed:
- To compete in other dance categories; choreography must use only the permitted figures (see tables below).
- To add extra figures as decoration at the start of the choreography.
- To use parts of figures, transfer figures from one dance to another, or syncopate the rhythm.
Finals of up to 8 participants, full ranking from 1st to 8th place. Competitors using non-permitted figures are disqualified and placed last in the respective final.
3. Basic 2 (Open Basic)
LAT and STD are danced separately.
- Juveniles 1, Juveniles 2 and Juniors I — LAT: Cha-Cha-Cha, Rumba and Jive; STD: Slow Waltz, Tango and Quickstep.
- Juniors II — LAT: Samba, Cha-Cha-Cha, Rumba and Jive; STD: Slow Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz and Quickstep.
- Older age groups — LAT: Samba, Cha-Cha-Cha, Rumba, Paso Doble and Jive; STD: Slow Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Slow Foxtrot and Quickstep.
- May dance one age group up.
- All Basic figures and parts of them may be used, as well as transferring figures between dances and syncopating the rhythm.
- Extra figures, actions and movements are allowed within the introduction — up to one bar of eight at the start of the music.
- May also dance in the Open category.
Not allowed:
- If the permitted figures are exceeded, competitors receive a warning; if in the next round they still do not dance within the Basic 2 syllabus, they are disqualified.
Finals of up to 8 participants, full ranking from 1st to 8th place.
4. Open
The same rules apply as for Basic 2 (Open Basic), but with no restriction on the figures used in the choreography.
Ranking with preliminary rounds up to the final.

Classification by Dance Format
Solo
- Open to boys, girls or mixed.
- Divided into dance categories by age and level, according to the conditions described above.
Couple
- A couple made up of a boy and a girl.
- Divided into dance categories by age and level, according to the conditions described above.
Synchro Duo
- A dance duo of two performers — the duo is assessed as a single unit.
- Choreography is danced in synchrony throughout; changes, repositioning and mirror dancing are not allowed.
- Age groups: Up to 9, Up to 13, Over 13.
- Dances: Up to 9 — Cha-Cha-Cha and Jive; Up to 13 and Over 13 — Cha-Cha-Cha, Rumba and Jive.
- Finals of up to 8 participants, full ranking. Separate competitions for Basic 2 and Open levels.
Synchro Group
- The group dances in one arrangement from start to finish; changes to the rows/shapes of the starting arrangement and mirror dancing are not allowed.
- Age groups: Up to 9, Up to 13, Over 13.
- Types: small synchro groups (3–7 dancers), large synchro groups 1 (7–15 dancers), large synchro groups 2 (over 15 dancers).
- Duration 2:30 min (10-second tolerance, after which the music is stopped). Full ranking with preliminary rounds.
- No restrictions on costumes, music or dance styles used.
Formation
- Types: formation, couples formation.
- Duration 2:30 min (10-second tolerance, after which the music is stopped). Full ranking with preliminary rounds in each age group.
- No restrictions on costumes, music or dance styles used.
- Changes of arrangement within the formation, movement within the rows, lifts and other effects (costume changes during the dance, props on the floor, etc.) are allowed.
Show Dance
- Types: solo, couple.
- Age groups: Up to 11, Up to 15, Over 15.
- Duration 2:30 min (10-second tolerance, after which the music is stopped). Full ranking with preliminary rounds in each age group.
- No restrictions on costumes. Props, if any, are brought onto the floor by the dancers immediately before the dance.
- No restrictions on the music or dance styles used.
Single-Dance Cup
- Types: solo, couple.
- Age groups: Up to 11, Up to 15, Over 15.
- Basic and Open rules apply.
